I’m a UK female voiceover artist who’s been making radio commercials for more than three decades, back when recording with reel-to-reel tapes was the norm and reading with silent breaths kept you in a job because the producer didn’t have to spend hours cutting tape!
So as a professional with that amount of experience behind a microphone, I’m used to getting things down in one take.
In fact, when I first started voicing radio commercials, the copywriter immediately noticed I could time a 30-second script perfectly. Rest assured, I still can.
But radio commercials aren’t just about timing. They’re also about persuasion, emotion, performance, entertainment and skill.
I can read a radio or TV commercial like it’s a reflex action. Hard sell, soft sell, trustworthy, natural, intimate, extrovert, motherly, daughterly, naughty and anything else you can think of – I’ve voiced them all.
You see, in the days before the internet and home studios, a British female voice talent like me would drive thousands of miles up and down the country, arrive at stations and have to plough through a stack of voiceover scripts. And they could be any voiceover style you can think of.
That’s why I’m so versatile, why I’m one of longest serving female voice talents in the UK, and why I’ve voiced about 100,000 radio commercials since.
